Alan McDonald

Alan has worked for the Department of Conservation for 13 years in various portfolios. His role within DOC is to progress landscape scale native plant restoration opportunities, working with iwi, community groups and others. Originally from Dublin, Ireland Alan has been in NZ for over 20 years. His previous work experience has been within restoration and the nursery sector in NZ, USA and Europe. Living in Christchurch, outside of work Alan assists various community groups with ecological advice and restoration.

There is an unprecedented interest to protect and restore our whenua, this reflects a turning point in the appetite to embrace and enrich our native forests. However, we need to ensure that we apply ecological rigour to this groundswell of interest to protect the mauri of our native ngahere. The Department of Conservation has a major role to play in conserving New Zealand’ s native forests and heritage.
